wirecore commits / 7b6e67f

Add local-only mode and web UI, plan Pear app
Changes: 1. Add ENABLE_BRIDGE environment variable (default: false for safety) - Set to false to disable bridge to pub.wiredove.net - Prevents any harm to external relays - Run: ./start-relay.sh local 2. Create web UI at http://localhost:9000/ - Dark theme interface - Shows messages in reverse chronological order - Real-time stats (message count, authors, clients) - Indicates bridge mode (Local/Bridge) - Auto-refresh stats every 5 seconds - Buttons for Stats JSON and Messages JSON - Responsive design 3. Update start-relay.sh - Support "local" argument: ./start-relay.sh local - Display mode in startup message - Pass ENABLE_BRIDGE to node process 4. Create PEAR_APP_PLAN.md - Complete implementation plan for Pear desktop app - Architecture: Pure P2P using Hyperswarm - Terminal UI using blessed (like hyperident) - No central server required - Code reuse from relay, hyperident, wiredove-CLI - Step-by-step implementation phases - Security considerations - Testing plan - Deployment strategy Testing: - Relay started in local mode - Posted message: "Local-only test: No bridge..." - Logs confirm: Bridge DISABLED, no "Forwarded" messages - Web UI accessible at http://localhost:9000/ - Messages: 612 stored in Hypercore - No external traffic to wiredove.net Status: Relay now safe for development without affecting pub.wiredove.net Co-Authored-By: Claude Sonnet 4.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

# Wirecore Pear App - Implementation Plan

**Date**: 2026-01-20
**Status**: Planning Phase

---

## Overview

Build a Pear desktop application for Wirecore that provides:
111. **Local-first** P2P messaging using Hypercore
122. **APDS-compatible** protocol (like wiredove)
133. **No central server required** (fully P2P via Hyperswarm)
144. **Terminal UI** (Pear terminal app, like hyperident)

---

## Architecture

### Core Components

### Data Flow

421. **User posts message**
- Sign with Ed25519 (ANProto)
- Store in local Hypercore
- Announce to Hyperswarm DHT
- Replicate to peers

482. **User follows author**
- Join Hyperswarm topic for author's pubkey
- Replicate author's Hypercore
- Display messages in terminal UI

533. **P2P Replication**
- Hyperswarm discovers peers
- Corestore replicates cores
- No central relay needed

---

## Differences from Relay

---

## Key Design Decisions

### 1. Identity Storage

**Location**: `~/.wirecore/identity.json`

```json
{
"publicKey": "base64...",
"secretKey": "base64...",
"name": "username"
}
```

**Rationale**: Same pattern as wiredove-CLI for consistency.

### 2. Hypercore Storage

**Location**: `~/.wirecore/storage/`

```
~/.wirecore/storage/
├── [core-key-1]/ # Messages core
├── [core-key-2]/ # Blobs core
└── [core-key-3]/ # Metadata core
```

**Rationale**: Separate from relay storage to avoid conflicts.

### 3. Discovery Strategy

**Primary**: Hyperswarm DHT
- Topic = SHA256(author_pubkey)
- Join topic when following an author
- Announce own topic when posting

**Fallback**: Known relay servers (optional)
- Can connect to wirecore-relay via WebSocket
- Acts as "super peer" for message discovery
- Not required but helpful for bootstrapping

### 4. Terminal UI

**Library**: `blessed` (proven, used by hyperident)

**Layout**:
```
┌─ Wirecore ────────────────────────────────────────┐
│ Peers: 3 | Storage: 2.1MB | Following: 5 │
├───────────────────────────────────────────────────┤
│ [Messages] │
│ │
│ @alice... (2 mins ago) │
│ > Hello from Hypercore! │
│ │
│ @bob... (5 mins ago) │
│ > Testing P2P messaging │
│ │
├───────────────────────────────────────────────────┤
│ > Type message... (Ctrl+C to exit) │
└───────────────────────────────────────────────────┘
```

---

## Code Reuse from Existing Projects

### From wirecore-relay:

✅ **lib/wirecore-apds.js** - Core APDS logic
- Identity generation

- Blob storage
- Query functions

**Changes needed**:
- Remove HTTP-specific code
- Add Hyperswarm replication
- Use local config directory

### From hyperident:

✅ **Terminal UI patterns**
- blessed setup
- Input handling
- Screen layout

✅ **Identity management**
- Keypair storage
- Config directory creation

### From wiredove-CLI:

✅ **Message creation**
- YAML format
- ANProto signing
- Previous hash linking

---

## Dependencies

**Essential**:

wirecore relay add <url> # Add relay server (optional)
```
---
## Security Considerations
2811. **No plaintext private keys**
- Store in `~/.wirecore/` with 600 permissions
- Never log or transmit private keys
2852. **Signature verification required**
- Always verify ANProto signatures
- Reject unsigned messages
- Validate timestamp ranges
2903. **Blob size limits**
- Max 1MB per message
- Max 10MB per image
- Prevent DoS via large blobs
2954. **DHT poisoning protection**
- Validate core keys match expected format
- Don't replicate untrusted cores
- Rate limit new peer connections
---
## Testing Plan
### Unit Tests
```bash
brittle test/identity.test.js # Identity creation/loading
brittle test/apds.test.js # APDS protocol functions
brittle test/signing.test.js # ANProto signing/verification
```
### Integration Tests
```bash
brittle test/integration/two-peers.test.js # 2-peer message exchange
brittle test/integration/follow.test.js # Follow/unfollow flow
brittle test/integration/replication.test.js # Core replication
```
### Manual Testing
3221. Run 2 instances in separate terminals
3232. Post from instance A
3243. Verify message appears in instance B
3254. Test follow/unfollow
3265. Test offline -> online sync
---
## Deployment
### Pear Packaging
```bash
# Build
pear package

# Test packaged version
pear run pear://[key]

# Publish (when ready)
pear publish
```
### Distribution
**Link format**: `pear://[64-char-hex-key]`
**Installation**:
```bash
pear install pear://[key]
wirecore init myname
```
---
## Migration from Relay
Users can transition from relay to Pear app:
3611. **Export from relay**:
```bash
curl http://localhost:9000/all > messages.json
```
3662. **Import to Pear app**:
```bash
wirecore import messages.json
```
3713. **Verify**:
```bash
wirecore timeline
```
---
