Fix all wallet endpoints to use current address index from storage
USDT send was failing with "missing revert data" because endpoints were hardcoded to use account index 0, but user's USDT was at index 2. Fixed 5 locations in wallet-server.cjs: 1. Token send endpoint (line ~1672) - ethereum-usdt 2. Native send endpoint (line ~1749) - ethereum, bitcoin 3. Token fee estimation (line ~1564) - ethereum-usdt 4. Native fee estimation (line ~1608) - ethereum, bitcoin 5. Bitcoin transaction sync (line ~1873) - bitcoin All endpoints now: - Load identity and initialize storage - Call getCurrentAddress(chain) to get stored index - Use that index with wdk.getAccount(chain, accountIndex) This ensures transactions use the correct wallet address that actually holds the funds, not always defaulting to index 0. 1# Critical Bug: Wallet Mnemonic Doesn't Match Displayed Addresses
2
3**Date:** 2026-01-29
4**Severity:** CRITICAL
5**Category:** Security, UX, Data Integrity
6
7---
8
9## Summary
10
11The wallet displays addresses that are NOT derived from the exported wallet mnemonic. This breaks the fundamental promise of HD wallets and creates serious security and portability issues.
12
13---
14
15## The Problem
16
17### What Should Happen (HD Wallet Standard)
181. User creates/restores wallet with a 12-word mnemonic
192. ALL addresses are derived deterministically from that mnemonic using BIP44 paths
203. User exports mnemonic and can restore on any device to get the SAME addresses
214. Single mnemonic = complete backup of all funds
22
23### What Actually Happens
241. Wallet displays address: `0x1F7a76d8808a9637049185cf629e1556A5924619`
252. User exports "Wallet Mnemonic" from UI
263. That mnemonic derives to: `0xB91cc8b6803f55c2e1D2B56623790615C9951340`
274. **These don't match!**
28
29---
30
31## Test Results
32
33### Exported "Wallet Mnemonic" #1
34```
35[REDACTED - 12 words]
36```
37
38**Derives to:**
39- Path `m/44'/60'/0'/0/0`: `0xB91cc8b6803f55c2e1D2B56623790615C9951340`
40- Has 0.11 ETH on Sepolia
41- Has 6 transactions
42- **NOT the address shown in wallet UI**
43
44### Exported "Identity Mnemonic" #2
45```
46[REDACTED - longer phrase]
47```
48
49**Derives to:**
50- Path `m/44'/60'/0'/0/0`: `0x354c6c5Ab58B912910d93caB5Ca04a3D8279448D`
51- **Also NOT the address shown in wallet UI**
52
53### Displayed in Wallet UI
54- Address: `0x1F7a76d8808a9637049185cf629e1556A5924619`
55- Has 0.318 ETH on Sepolia (user-confirmed)
56- Now has 1000 USDT (transferred from 0xB91c... address)
57
58---
59
60## Impact
61
62### Security Risks
631. **Loss of Funds**: User thinks they have a backup, but mnemonic doesn't control displayed addresses
642. **False Confidence**: "Export Mnemonic" feature gives false sense of security
653. **Unrecoverable Wallet**: If device is lost, funds at displayed addresses are unrecoverable
66
67### UX Failures
681. **Broken Portability**: Can't restore wallet on another device
692. **Confusion**: Multiple addresses with no clear relationship
703. **Trust Violation**: Wallet promises HD deterministic addresses but doesn't deliver
71
72### Data Integrity
731. **Storage Mismatch**: Stored addresses don't match derived addresses
742. **Unknown Source**: Where did `0x1F7a...` come from?
753. **Audit Impossibility**: Can't verify which mnemonic controls which funds
76
77---
78
79## Root Cause Analysis
80
81### Hypothesis 1: Multiple Mnemonics in Use
82- Identity mnemonic (`.mnemonic`) for P2P identity
83- Wallet mnemonic (`.wallet-mnemonic`) for funds
84- **But neither matches displayed addresses!**
85
86### Hypothesis 2: Addresses Stored from Different Source
87- Addresses might be stored in DB from previous wallet session
88- New mnemonic was created but old addresses remain in storage
89- Wallet reads from storage instead of deriving fresh
90
91### Hypothesis 3: Bug in Address Derivation
92- WDK initialization uses wrong mnemonic
93- Storage layer uses different mnemonic than derivation layer
94- Race condition where different mnemonics are used at different times
95
96---
97
98## Code Review Needed
99
100### Files to Investigate
1011. **wallet-server.cjs**
102 - Lines 388-430: Balance endpoint uses `loadWalletMnemonicCached()`
103 - Lines 448-490: Address endpoint uses `initializeWDK(walletMnemonic, ...)`
104 - Verify same mnemonic is used consistently
105
1062. **lib/wdk-integration.cjs**
107 - Line 92: `new WDK.default(walletMnemonic)` - is this the right mnemonic?
108 - Lines 56-79: `loadWalletMnemonic()` decryption
109
1103. **lib/wallet-storage.cjs**
111 - `getCurrentAddress()` - where do stored addresses come from?
112 - `storeAddress()` - are addresses verified against mnemonic before storing?
113
114### Questions to Answer
1151. When wallet starts, what mnemonic initializes WDK?
1162. Where did address `0x1F7a...` originally come from?
1173. Is there validation that stored addresses match derived addresses?
1184. Can addresses be manually imported/entered?
119
120---
121
122## Proposed Fix
123
124### Phase 1: Diagnosis (Immediate)
1251. Add startup validation:
126 ```javascript
127 // On wallet startup
128 const walletMnemonic = loadWalletMnemonic(password)
129 const { wdk } = await initializeWDK(walletMnemonic, config)
130
131 // For each stored address
132 for (const addr of storedAddresses) {
133 const derived = await wdk.getAccount(addr.chain, addr.index)
134 const derivedAddr = await derived.getAddress()
135
136 if (derivedAddr !== addr.address) {
137 console.error('⚠️ CRITICAL: Stored address mismatch!')
138 console.error(` Stored: ${addr.address}`)
139 console.error(` Derived: ${derivedAddr}`)
140 // Warn user or clear invalid addresses
141 }
142 }
143 ```
144
1452. Add mnemonic verification endpoint:
146 ```javascript
147 POST /api/verify-mnemonic
148 // Returns all addresses that WOULD be derived from mnemonic
149 // User can compare with displayed addresses

152### Phase 2: Data Migration (Required)
1531. **CRITICAL**: Cannot just clear addresses - might lose fund tracking
1542. Options:
155 - **Option A**: Keep both mnemonics, clearly label which controls which addresses
156 - **Option B**: Migrate funds to new addresses derived from current mnemonic
157 - **Option C**: Allow multiple "wallets" within app, each with own mnemonic
158
159### Phase 3: Enforcement (Future)
1601. NEVER store addresses that don't match mnemonic
1612. Always derive fresh from mnemonic (with caching)
1623. Add unit tests:
163 ```javascript
164 test('exported mnemonic derives to displayed addresses', async () => {
165 const mnemonic = exportMnemonic()
166 const addresses = getDisplayedAddresses()
167 const derived = deriveAddresses(mnemonic)
168 assert.deepEqual(derived, addresses)
169 })
170 ```

174## Immediate Actions
175
1761. **Document the issue** (this file)
1772. **Warn users**: Add banner in UI if mismatch detected
1783. **Debug storage**: Find where `0x1F7a...` came from
1794. **Verify all paths**: Ensure WDK uses correct mnemonic everywhere
1805. **Add validation**: Check derived = stored on every address display
181
182---
183
184## Testing Plan
185
186### Manual Test
1871. Create new wallet with known mnemonic
1882. Derive address #0 manually (ethers.js)
1893. Check wallet UI shows same address
1904. Export mnemonic from UI
1915. Verify exported mnemonic matches creation mnemonic
1926. Derive from exported mnemonic
1937. Verify derivation matches UI
194
195### Automated Test
196```javascript
197// tests/mnemonic-consistency.test.js
198test('wallet addresses match mnemonic derivation', async () => {
199 // Create wallet
200 const mnemonic = generateMnemonic()
201 await createWallet(mnemonic, password)
202
203 // Get displayed address
204 const response = await fetch('/api/address/ethereum')
205 const { address: displayed } = await response.json()
206
207 // Derive expected address
208 const wallet = ethers.Wallet.fromPhrase(mnemonic)
209 const expected = wallet.address
210
211 // Must match!
212 assert.equal(displayed, expected)
213})
214```

226## Security Notice
227
228**DO NOT** distribute wallet with this bug. Users could lose funds by thinking they have a valid backup when they don't.
229
230This must be fixed before any production release.

234## Next Steps
235
2361. User confirms current addresses shown in UI
2372. Investigate storage to find source of `0x1F7a...` address
2383. Determine if this is per-user issue or systemic bug
2394. Implement validation and warning system
2405. Plan data migration strategy
2416. Add comprehensive tests
