basal-agent: SYNTHESIS.md — the three threecarrier voids and the deferred-benefit diagnosis
Records all three void attempts in Part D rather than quietly dropping them, with the fault each one exposed: production replacing compartments instead of adding (extinction, caught by the parasite column reading zero); a K1 control calibrated identically to its own arm (caught by a T0 guard added after); and payoff made expensive to rediscover with templates still collapsing (T0 again). THE WALL, STATED MORE SHARPLY: templates sit at 0.006-0.010 in every arm of every attempt. A template costs a slot NOW, lowering current function, and between-compartment selection scores current function EVERY generation. Its benefit is deferred and conditional — it pays only if a type is later lost. Making rediscovery expensive raises the deferred payoff without touching the immediate cost. AND THE OBVIOUS REMEDY COLLIDES WITH A MEASURED RESULT: for the deferred benefit to land inside the selection horizon, losses must be frequent, i.e. few copies per type, i.e. small compartments — exactly the regime fidfloor.c measured as destroying sequence information. Fourth time the answer comes back "small compartments correct but forget". Proven/open gains it as a DIAGNOSIS marked with a warning, not a result, since all three runs were void. NEXT STEP RECORDED, and it does not collide with anything measured: make the environment FLUCTUATE. If the target set changes over time, a type not needed now becomes needed later, so holding it in a template pays REGULARLY rather than CONDITIONALLY — converting a deferred benefit into a recurring one without requiring small compartments. Unbuilt. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

## `threecarrier.c` — three attempts, three voids, and a sharper statement of the wall

The arc had only ever tested **reachability** of parts, never **stability** of the whole. Every
failure had one shape — one object asked to do two jobs — and the two things that worked
(`linkage.c`, `rung45irr.c`) worked by making a coupling *structural* rather than elective. So:
three carriers (a boundary nobody maintains, a metabolism that produces, a template that only
remembers), seeded **complete**, asked only whether it persists. Gánti's chemoton, tested rather
than asserted.

**All three attempts were void, and each fix exposed a deeper flaw:**

 attempt | fault | caught by |
---|---|---|
1 | production **replaced** each compartment instead of adding to it — every arm starved to extinction (FULL ended at 0 units *and* 0 parasites, which is death, not collapse) | reading the parasite column |
 2 | the K1 "decoupled" control gave growth `GROW*CAP*0.5` = 4.4, **identical by construction** to the coupled `GROW*nc` at nc≈8 | a T0 guard added after |
3 | payoff made expensive to rediscover (4 specific types of 16) — **templates still collapsed** | T0 again |

**The wall, stated more sharply than before.** Templates sit at 0.006–0.010 in every arm of every
attempt. A template **costs a slot now**, lowering current function — and between-compartment
selection scores current function **every generation**. Its benefit is **deferred and conditional**:
it pays only if a type is later lost. Making rediscovery expensive raises the deferred payoff without
touching the immediate cost, so the trade is lost before it can be won.

**And the obvious remedy collides with a measured result.** For the deferred benefit to land inside
the selection horizon, losses must be frequent — meaning few copies per type, meaning **small
compartments** — which is exactly the regime `fidfloor.c` measured as *destroying* sequence
information. Fourth time in the arc that the answer comes back *small compartments correct but
forget*.

**This is not a parameter away from working**, which is why three voids were committed as voids
rather than patched into a fourth. The design does not converge; the question is still good.

**The next step, and it does not collide with anything measured:** make the **environment fluctuate**.
If the target set changes over time, a type not needed now becomes needed later, and holding it in a
template pays *regularly* rather than *conditionally*. That converts a deferred benefit into a
recurring one without requiring small compartments — the standard route by which fluctuating
environments select for memory and bet-hedging. **Unbuilt.**
