basal-agent: ribozyme.c — replicase fidelity bootstrap IGNITES, but only with compartments
The deepest attempt: does a ribozyme replicase bootstrap its own fidelity from a random low- fidelity soup? Razor held: catalysis = emergent hairpin fold score phi (no encoded winner); fidelity EMERGES from catalysis (f0=0.85 -> F1=0.999); catalysis is a PUBLIC GOOD and parasites (low phi) free-ride/replicate faster. Measured: does phi rise? Well-mixed vs compartments, sweep size. Sharp result (3 seeds): well-mixed 5.99 -> 5.50 (parasites win, fidelity 0.918) compartments x4 5.99 -> 11.64 (IGNITES, fidelity 0.995) compartments x8 5.99 -> 11.34 (ignites, 0.991) compartments x16 5.99 -> 5.90 (fails) compartments x32 5.99 -> 5.73 (fails) Bootstrap IGNITES from below (fidelity 0.92->0.995, phi 6->11.6, un-encoded) but ONLY in small compartments — a sharp threshold between size 8 and 16. This is the Szathmary-Demeter stochastic corrector: the escape from Eigen's paradox is COMPARTMENTALIZATION. The ladder is not 1->2->..->4 but 1 + 4 -> 2, co-dependent — matching our 'heredity may require compartments' finding. Honest bounds: strongest positive result of the arc, but NOT from-scratch abiogenesis. I supplied (1) the structure->catalysis->fidelity coupling (RNA-world premise), (2) compartments+group selection (rung 4). The bootstrap AMPLIFIES pre-existing weak catalysis (random phi~6), not from zero. The fidelity/replicase half of rung 1->2 crosses GIVEN a catalysis map and compartments. 324### The deepest attempt: does a ribozyme replicase BOOTSTRAP its own fidelity? (`ribozyme.c`)

The escape polymer.c pointed to: a replicase that improves fidelity for its own kind, igniting a positive
feedback over the error threshold. Razor (no encoded winner): catalysis is an *emergent structural* property
— φ(s) = hairpin fold score (self-complementarity), a fixed fold→function rule many sequences satisfy.
**Fidelity emerges from catalysis:** f = f0 + (F1−f0)·(meanφ/φmax), f0=0.85 (un-catalyzed) → F1=0.999. The
honest catch: catalysis is a **public good**, and unstructured **parasites replicate faster and free-ride**
(weight 1+β·(1−φ/φmax), β=2). Nothing rewards being the replicase; measured is whether φ (hence fidelity)
*rises* from a random start (mean φ≈6), well-mixed vs compartmentalized, sweeping compartment size:

 arm | mean φ (start→end, max 12) | fidelity end |
---|---|---|
 well-mixed (no compartments) | 5.99 → **5.50** (parasites win) | 0.918 |
 compartments 1200×**4** | 5.99 → **11.64** | **0.995** |
 compartments 600×**8** | 5.99 → 11.34 | 0.991 |
 compartments 300×16 | 5.99 → 5.90 (fails) | 0.923 |
 compartments 150×32 | 5.99 → 5.73 (fails) | 0.921 |

**BOOTSTRAP IGNITES — but only with small compartments, a sharp threshold between size 8 and 16.** Fidelity
climbs 0.92 → 0.995, φ from the random-entropy value 6 to near-maximal 11.6 — genuinely (φ never rewarded
directly). Well-mixed and large compartments *fail*: catalysis is a public good, parasites free-ride and
drive φ down. Small compartments (the stochastic corrector, Szathmáry–Demeter 1987): random assortment at
division makes some protocells catalyst-rich, between-compartment selection spreads them faster than
within-compartment parasites erode them → fidelity ratchets up. **The escape from Eigen's paradox is
COMPARTMENTALIZATION** — and this is the same "heredity may *require* compartments" we found in the research
verdict and `gardenv`. The ladder is not 1→2→…→4; it is **1 + 4 → 2**, co-dependent.

**Honest bounds — what this is and is NOT.** It is the strongest positive result of the arc: fidelity
bootstraps from below, un-encoded, and sharply requires compartments — the field's proposed escape, shown to
*work in principle* in our own model. It is **not** from-scratch abiogenesis: (1) I supplied the
structure→catalysis→fidelity coupling (the RNA-world premise that folded sequences *are* better replicases) —
whether that genotype→phenotype map arises unaided is unshown; (2) I supplied compartments + group selection
as given (rung 4 — which *does* emerge separately in `rung34.c`, but not inside this same model); (3) the
bootstrap *amplifies pre-existing weak catalysis* (random φ≈6), it does not create catalysis from zero. So
the fidelity/replicase half of rung 1→2 crosses **given** a catalysis map and compartments — a real,
conditional crossing that makes explicit the two ingredients that must themselves emerge.
